Double titanal laminates, as well as an underfoot metal plate take the performance of this ski to the next level. I'm 5'9, 165 pounds, and I'm a predominantly east coast skier. I think you're on the right track here and I do think the Tracer 98 could potentially work for you. Well, maybe not, but you get my point. I'd say 180 is great! 28.5). Nope! I would be forever grateful for any insights or recommendations you can provide regarding my selections for a pair of skis, and their respective lengths, that will best suit my goal of improving my skills all over the mountain. The tip is softer than the midbody and tail, mostly due to the Hollowtech in the tips, and while this assists with the initiation phase and the transitions, the forgiveness of the ski ends there. This guide is for Alpine Skis. The Tracer 98 doesn't have any metal, but it should be stable enough for how you ski given your description. Sizing wise, the 172's in the BC's seem right, but in the Enforcer, I think I would go to the 177. I have been spending hours reading through all of them while on Christmas vacation. Thanks. So mixed skiing, but enjoying stability. Still will do both tho. Looking for 1 quiver ski as the 15 bonifides served that purpose well for me east or west fast or deep powder. Currently skiing 2018 Enforcer 100s. Still have questions? Hi Murray! ), Hi Kevin! Carve, float, pivot and smear. At the low end, it hooks into the titanal laminate which extends down toward the tail and becomes full-width underfoot. Adam, Update, I went with the 98ti and purchased them SE. Weve had these in over two feet of fresh snow, and frankly, they do just fine. Maybe you spend a little time in the terrain park, but don't want to be limited by a narrower ski. Blizzard rustler 9/10 This gives the ski an insane amount of stability and smoothness that is not found elsewhere in such a playful ski. SE, Hi, Have fun! I'm looking for something great in the powder that I can also ski on a groomer if need be. Looking for something between 97-101 underfoot with a partial or full twin tip. This gives it a great feel on firm snow as you get full length edge contact, however the M5 Mantra is impressively maneuverable in softer snow conditions as well. Some certainly will, but if off-trail skiing becomes your preference, chances are youve graduated to the next level. Each of these skis offers their own unique set of attributes, performance characteristics, and overall feel. Thanks, HI Howard! SE, Bonafide 97, Mantra 102, and Enforcer 100 are right up there in best of class in carving ability in this group. SE. Underfoot, it's a lot like the Bonafide, but the metal tapers and ends as it reaches the tips and tails, which use more early taper and rocker than the Bonafide too. JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser. Murray, Hi Murray! I really like the versatility/profile of the enforcer 100, but I'm worried about all the weight. . I'm 6'3" 235lb I am all mountain skiing mostly east coast , but 2 trips a year out west. I think the best thing to do here is to get a ski that blends the power and precision of the Mantra with a more playful, soft-snow oriented ski for your sidecountry and soft snow adventures. SE, Your email address will not be published. 6'3" 200 pound mid-40s ex-racer & instructor here. Head is another company focusing on delivering high-end performance in a lightweight package. All in all, the build and shape lead to a fun-loving and fantastic overall attitude for the Holyshred. Hope that helps! Hope that helps! If youre looking for more flotation, the RP shaping versions of these skis are better choices, but for a more business-like personality, these Pagoda Piste 100 C2s have a whole lot to offer. Hi Nicole! The main story here, though, is the rocker profile and the amount of splay in the tips and tails, making this ski stay up and out of fresh snow, while leading to a turnier overall mentality due to the shorter effective edge. That long tip rocker also helps smooth out turn initiation on firm snow, helping you to link carving turns. Have fun! Hi Stu! I mostly ski in the East but have recently started skiing more out West. A lot of that has to do with the tail shape, which is more bulbous than most of the competition. It's a blast in powder, trees, and other off-piste scenarios and its lightweight feel and relatively soft flex pattern offers an important choice in this category. What skis do you think I should be considering? Thoughts on the enforcer 100 or other skis I should consider? Volkl changed up the Mantra for the 2019 season! Use: This is a question thats most relevant to advanced or expert skiers: Where are you skiing? I liked them. For the best experience on our site, be sure to turn on Javascript in your browser. Much lighter, more rocker, less metal, etc. My young kids enjoy going off piste and I do not like my skis on moguls or in trees. SE. Add two sheets of metal and two fiberglass laminates to the mix, and youve got a great deal of power and energy in the ski. Too short, and you'll find your forearm angled downward. Weight Weight single piece (g) / Size (cm) : 1800 / 184 Skill Level Beginner Advanced Expert BENT CHETLER 120 The skis on your list are very high-performance, and will certainly fit your personal skiing needs, they'll just be on the heavy side for kid skiing. Im 55, 510, 195, Intermediate/Advanced. Hey guys! I'd go 92 unless you want something a bit burlier and wider. Considering your weight, I'm thinking either QST 99 or Ranger 98 Ti would be best. Your review of them was spot on. I have heard good things about the Black Crows line. With the expansion of the Bent Chetler series- Atomic has decided to make a Chetler for every application. Sometimes you just need to speak to a expert, so if you're still having trouble picking a size, please give us a call at (877) 812-6710. Any suggestions? Can you describe some of the nuances between these? Regarding the QST 92, do you recommend the 177 cm or the 185 cm length? Any ways, I am looking for some help, guidance and/or opinion on what I should focus on. If you measure a Men's 8/Mondopoint 26, please select 26.5, for example. Built with a blend of aspen and ash in the wood core and two sheets of pre-preg carbon in the construction, these skis have an amazing blend of stiffness and light weight to appease the hardest-charging skiers out there. Good level. Erik, Hi Erik! SE. Most of my skiing is on the east vs west and I often dont travel west with my skis. SE, I'm currently skiing 2009 K2 Apache Xplorer in the 177 length. Looking for something a little lighter and more directional than the Bacons that I can have fun on on less than stellar days, improve my trad skiing skills on (lessons on Bacons is kinda counter-productive) and still practice some switch and jumps (hoping to nail 180 and maybe 360 this season). So I'm always teaching. The Holyshred is somewhat lost at sea, adrift among a horde of great 98-100 mm all-mountain freestyle skis. The Rustler is a bit more of a twin-tip shape, so the tail releases easier than the Pinnacle. The Ranger 102 is a little more soft snow focused, while the Enforcer 100 performs a little better on firm snow. These skis seem super similar, anyone tried both and have any thoughts? Then skis got wider. SE. the Atomic lineup is dialed these days. Sitting just above the narrowest ski in the series, the Bent 90 is Atomic's take on an all-mountain park ski. I love that ski in moguls, and I think it would provide a refreshing alternative to your Bonafides. I might say the Enforcer 94 is a better choice for eastern ice, and gives you a bit more quickness and less material overall. You're willing to give up some edge contact on firm snow for the extra soft snow performance. Chairlift Chat is the official blog of Skiessentials.com. So I snagged them. I took skiing lessons from a very young age (6 years or something) so I am also a technical skier. Our Verdict. Black diamond, double black diamond, centuple black diamond, it doesnt even matter. I would have a good deal on the Enforcer 100 (19/20), so not sure if the difference would be worth it. Doh! I just got back into skiing last year. With a bit of extra length, the skis will have a more accurate flex and better weight distribution. Any recommendations as far as length would also be appreciated. But I still want something so that I can be aggressive / ski off-piste crud and powder when I want. It won't have the same tank-like feel of some of the heavier skis we're looking at in this article, but manufacturers are making strides in retaining stability and vibration damping while bringing down the overall weight. Theyre not as smooth as the sick days on the groomers so Im hoping that detune will help because theyre definitely easier to throw around. Thank you! Ive just had the 2018 and 2020 Rossignol sky 7 HDs in a row (which I absolutely loved btw) but fancy something ever so slightly stiffer. SE. SE, Hi, The Dynastar M-Pro 99 has a unique build and shape to it that sets it apart from other skis on this list, and its interesting both hand-flexing it and looking at the profile of the ski as it sits on the wall. Hi David! That said, the K2 Pinnacle 95 and the Rustler 9 are simply narrower versions of the 105 and the 10, so that's worth a look as well. SE. Thanks! Also, I'm trying to teach my 5 and 3 yo kids to ski so I'm in need of some maneuverability. I like to charge hard and make nice big super-g turns, but also looking for a ski a bit more agile in the moguls and trees. After a number of demos and research, I purchased the Rossignol Experience Ti 88s (173cm) earlier this season. As one of the more front-side and carving-oriented skis of this grouping, the K2 Mindbender 99 Ti is engaging, stable, and totally powerful. I found the Enforcer the "funnest" of the three with the best mix of performance but was looking for something with similar stability but more soft snow performance and slashy/pivotable in steep/deepish west coast powder. But perhaps Ive got enough weight and height to get enough reaction out of the 184 Mantras if I need shorter turns? I am 52 years old and i am 5-10 and 185. Not impossible, but certainly on the long side for your stats. This is the number that our ski techs will use to mount your bindings. The first ski in this comparison that could be described as a twin tip, the Ranger 102 FR is another ski with some obvious freeski influence in its design and construction. It loves to make quick movements and really reacts well to skier input. I ski approx. Considering the Mantra M5 as a one-ski quiver, as from what I have read and heard performs well in all conditions. By rejecting non-essential cookies, Reddit may still use certain cookies to ensure the proper functionality of our platform. Hi Trent! Yes, theyre twin tips. The maneuverability of the Tracer 98 in the 180 cm length would be off the charts for you, and shouldn't feel too unstable. I think the 184 is a bit of a reach. I live close to a hill that has mixed conditions throughout the season in Wyoming but I also have a short distance to travel for resorts known for good powder. Hope that helps! I'm 5' 7'', 175 lbs, mostly ski in Tahoe. Theres a bit of tail rocker, but nothing crazy, while the tip rocker is slightly more dramatic, leading to a greater splay and rise. I suppose I'm also a bit confused because with much of my skiing being on moguls (of the sort that develop as a steep slope is left alone, not regularly shaped competitive ones), specialized mogul skis would be close to slalom skis, whereas skis for variable surface conditions get quite a bit wider--so what does one best use on moguls with variable surface conditions? Great review! I'm really torn between the Bent Chetler 100 (180cm) and the Sick Day 104 (179 or 186cm) for a 50/50 one ski quiver mounted with Shifts to be used mostly in the French Alps. I'd like to buy a pair of skis for these conditions. In Stock Now: New 2023 Atomic. I'm having a hard time deciding. It uses some of the longest rocker in this comparison article, especially in the tip. Both of these are a bit more user-friendly than Enforcer but still a total blast. What do you think would be a good fit? Thanks again! They're both super-versatile and a ton of fun. The two skis Ive narrowed it down to are the Enforcer 100 in 185 and Mantra M5 in 177. SE. IN the 92, I'd go 185--just nice to know that you're not leaving any performance on the table. Also the Volkl Deacon 84 (or RTM 84 from previous years) are great skis. I do love pure powder but I'm not as experienced in that yet, I think someday when I retire I'll buy a powder-dedicated ski for those times. Well, maybe not, but you get my point. Specifically, I've been eyeing the Sky 7 and the QST 99. Those skis all blend power and playfulness. What would you suggest? The Enforcer 100 would be another good one to consider. Combine this with the fact that the Enforcer 100 uses more rocker than anything we've talked about so far (50% total) and you've got a very smooth ski that stays stable on firm snow, holds an edge well, but also allows you to pivot and smear the ski. Welcome back to skiing! Hi, thank you for great reviews, but the more I read I seem to get more confused with what I need. or Best Offer. You can use them most days when the snow is soft. This makes the ski pretty responsive out of the tail, but when combined with the more flexible nature of the ski, its still pretty darn playful. Please let me know if you have any advice between the two or recommend another ski. These laminates are thinner than most, at .4mm wide, so its not a ton of metal, but still does the trick. Thank you for the comment! We've talked about the Rossignol Experience 94 Ti filling that gap of a less-demanding and more playful Mantra. I demo-ed the Blizzard Bonafide 180cm and Nordica Enforcer 100 185 cm this year, and of those two I really enjoyed the E100 for it's versatility. I do get out west occasionally and will ski the entire mountain with a preference to ungroomed soft snow. It's entirely possible and very common for boots with the same Mondo Point to have different Boot Sole Lengths. This ski is one of the burliest on the marketwilling and capable to tackle anything on the mountain at high rates of speed. Im in the market for a one ski quiver. Myself? Heck, you could probably even ski blindfolded and with your hands tied behind your back. It's about as versatile and friendly of a ski that you'll find. It doesn't have to be a super powder ski - I have atomic automatics for this - and I would really like it to carve well on piste. They're solid bindings. Proving once again that a good ski is a good ski. Hi John! QST is a better floater, but Enforcer rips harder on groomers. . I'd say the Sky is the best floater of the three, but doesn't quite have the stability of the Salomon. The first thing I noticed about the Bent Chetlers was that they do feel light, at first they kind of reminded me of my old skinny park skis the first time I jumped on the chair and my feet were just dangling. Thanks! I'm really torn between the Bent Chetler 100 (180cm) and the Sick Day 104 (179 or 186cm) for a 50/50 one ski quiver mounted with Shifts to be used mostly in the French Alps. Any insight you can offer between these skis would be awesome! Still charge pretty hard and value edge grip and carving abilities along with quickness off-piste. The other thing that stands out with the Stance 102 is the fact that it has fairly dramatic tip and tail rocker. Thanks so much, and keep up the awesome reviews!!! We're about the same size, and I loved the stability of the ski, even without two sheets of metal. Im based in the Midwest but will travel 1-2 times per year, mostly out west but also some New England. However, I'm having a rough time in deep tracked powder and crud, which I know these skis aren't ideal for. Metal skis are tough in the bumps, especially hard ones. Rossignol Blackops Day 92 . If you measure a Men's 8/Mondopoint 26, please select 26.5, for example. The QST 99s I have is 174cm.I am just wondering if there's something in between the Mantra and the QST. Keep in mind that you will have to change your style and adapt a bit and be ready for a "softer" ski flex on most freeride skis compared to a narrow waisted ski with metal in its core. Nice, versatile skis that have a high-end for progressing skiers. Have fun! Most intermediate skiers will be tempted to wander off trail, but may not be brave enough quite yet. Thinking 100 under foot but maybe thats the problem. Theyre playful and fun to the nth degree, and provide fantastic value to boot. This ski just keeps on chugging along. Who it's For: Salomon added basalt and doubled the amount of carbon and flax in the QST 99 for 2019. Sometimes you just need to speak to a expert, so if you're still having trouble picking a size, please give us a call at (877) 812-6710. For more stability at speed, that does come at the price of weight, the QST is a great ski for sure. Its not as rockered in the tail as some of the other skis on this list, and that adds to the strong finish of the arc. I read a lot of your reviews to help me understand more about the differences, so thank you for that! Check out the Blizzard Rustler 10 and 9 (104 vs 94 underfoot) as well as the K2 Pinnacle 95 and 105. Who it's For: You're not the most aggressive skier on the hill and you like to spend more time off the trail than on it. In your description of your skiing, I got the impression you spend a fair amount of time on groomers and like to ski somewhat fast sometimes (Birds of Prey is what comes to mind). After seeing your youtube video I have narrowed it down to the following skis: Salomon QST 99, Atomic Bent Chetler 100, Nordica Enforcer 100 or Fischer Ranger 102 FR. SE. I'm the rip van winkle of skiing. I want to find a pair of skis thats comfortable for an intermediate but that will continue to grow with me as I advance to more technical terrain. Any other ski worth looking into? I'm definitely not the most aggressive skier; I appreciate being able to ski in control at moderate speeds, especially in the steeper off-piste stuff. A versatile one-ski quiver on the wider end, the Armada Declivity 102 shouldnt be overlooked on any advanced or expert skiers list. Also check out the K2 Pinnacle 95 and the Blizzard Rustler 9 for comparison. I'm down to these three: Weve also found them to be better suited to firmer snow or fresh powder versus crud and chop, where having weight underfoot does make a difference in the stability and compliance of the ski. Whats your thoughts? After suffering a catastrophic spiral tib/fib in 2010 I hung em up. Any help is much appreciated. Josh, Love the reviews guys and your youtube vids! I love the Soul Rider as an all-mountain ski. Murray. SE. It's a much better ski, in my opinion, than the Bent Chetler 100. Thanks much. Have fun! The Vantage 97 Ti is a perfect example of that concept. I am looking to buy a new pair of skis, more playful and freestyle-oriented than my current Rossignol EST. Im a mid-30s advanced (expert on piste) skier, 190lbs, 61 and ski 90% in the European Alps 10-15 days a year (with the occasional trip to the West Coast). sorrycan't edit posts here. If you're looking to stay in the ~100 mm category and want a more friendly Enforcer, look to the Atomic Bent Chetler 100 or the Salomon QST 99. Liberty has updated the ski for 2019 with a new rocker profile, which actually reduces the total rocker in the ski. Built with a light wood core and Stocklis Titec Pro metal topsheet, these things are true Stocklis--worthy of the praise and price for dedicated all-mountain skiers. I skied the 185 last year and found it decent stability-wise, but not amazing. Could be powder, park, groomers, trees, or bumps, you do not care, and neither does the Camox. The Kastle MX 99 is stiff, powerful, and holds an edge better than just about anything in the 100 mm category. Let me know what you think! I'm 5'10", 180 lbs. $3.99 shipping. Twice as good as snowboarding, obviously, as we have twice the number of edges. The mantras are heavy as *** but I am really only hiking to a bit of sidecountry, not any real touring. If I were to choose one for everything, I'd take the more versatile QST 98, but since I have other skis, I love that BC 100 in the trees! Jim, Hi Jim! Both have similar overall characteristics as the Enforcer, just without metal. The Rocket Frame titanal laminate supports this theory, with full-metal underfoot and wider metal through the back end of the ski, its all business back there, and quite stiff to flex. I'm 6', 165lbs without gear. An all mountain ski with some distinct freeride influence is a great way to describe it. I'm in western Canada, so I ski Banff, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse. We usually pair skis of this caliber with either the Marker Griffon 13 or the Tyrolia Attack 13--both have strong performance. Built with a poplar wood core and fiberglass, its got a simple core, but the shaping and profiling set it apart. thanks! Mark, Hi Mark! From the length I was thinking to 180cm. The BC 100 is one of the best all around freeride skis out there. In the past few years, I've started loving going off-piste, so I've been looking at some wider skis, but I still spend time on groomers because that's where my friends are. Like the Ranger 99, the Kore gets narrower underfoot as the sizes decrease below 177 (and slightly wider in the 184 and 191), so take that into account in your decision-making process. Between the two you can kind of just decide whether you want a little more soft snow performance or a little more firm snow performance. The lower rise rocker gives the ski better edge contact on firm snow, which has improved carving performance. You are looking for the nicest skis ever made. Have decided to invest in 100mm ski. You folks offer an impeccable and generous service. If you're just on the groomers, that's not a big deal, but it sounds like you're having fun in the woods, and that's where maneuverability really matters. I'm an intermediate skier, looking for that elusive 1-quiver. Another sandwich build with multi-titanal laminate. I raced and currently coach racing so I've decided I need something that I can demonstrate drills on but still take the kids into the trees when they lose focus and need a break. I loved how it busted through the crud and slush and held an edge on the corduroy. Do you need metal? Who it's For: Aggressive skiers who prefer carving over smearing, slipping, or pivoting turns. SE, Hi, While the previous ski on the list, the Mindbender 99 Ti, leans more to on-trail performance, this Salomon Stance 102 skews more to the fresh stuff. If you're looking for a strong-carving ski in that 100mm range, I'd check out the Volkl Mantra 102 and the Nordica Enforcer 100. They're both playful and super-fun, which is what sounds like you like. The Sky will give you the same fits regarding edge hold and the Black Crows are nice, but lack the metal build of the Nordica. Still have questions? I currently own a pair of 2013 Rossignol Soul 7s, 186, and a pair of 2014 Volkl RTM 84, 177. I'm wondering if you can help me decide between the QST 98 and the Bent Chetler 100. I've been skiing a totally different ski, Cochise, there awesome if I'm on my A game and want to rip but I'm getting older find them a bear anymore. SE, Brilliant, thanks for your reply. I've been looking mainly at the Bent Chetler 100s but would love further input. Hey SE! Check the charts below to see which size you need. I plan to keep the boots and bindings so I can still skin and ski, which makes up about 20% of my skiing. Demo'd sizes were a 182 (too small) and 188 which felt good but on the Enforcer idk if I would go 193 or 185?? Some certainly will, but if off-trail skiing becomes your preference, chances are youve graduated to the next level. Take a look at the chart below, and if you have any trouble figuring out your size range, scroll past the cart to where we provide more information regarding these categories. SE, Hey Jeff, thanks for the great reviews. We had a lot of fun in the trees with these skis, as the HRZN tech in the tips combines with that cap build to make it agile and swift while remaining stable and powerful on more groomed terrain. Any suggestions you have for some skis I should consider are most appreciated. thanks That said, I also spend a good amount of time cruising down groomers with my family members, so I need a ski that can do it all. Maybe a Tyrolia 13 or Warden 13 would be an alternative. I think you're a 185/184 skier for the most part except for family time, but then they'll just be on the heavy side. Its killing my race skis(and me) to go off piste and am looking for something that will bring a smile to my face while still providing a solid platform. I was thinking the Nordica Enforcer 100, though maybe I should be looking at the 93. Would love your recommendations. Who it's For: Like the Ranger 102 FR, it's best on the feet of a relatively playful skier, or at least a skier that values soft snow performance. Felt a little chatter on the hard pack at times but they were better than i thought they would be on fast groomers. I don't think the bit of extra flotation you'll get is enough to sway the overall performance of the ski. Deep Dive: Atomic Bent Chetler 100.
